In Australia, there are a number of different timber preservatives produced. Each type of preservative can treat timber destined for different applications, however, the way the timber is treated will vary accordingly. To ensure that the correct treatment type and level of treatment is used in an application, a system of Hazard Classes is used according to the definitions in Australian Standards as shown in the document below.
The higher the Hazard Class, the more severe the exposure is, therefore, it is important to purchase preservative treated timber to the correct Hazard Class irrespective of the preservative type. This means you need to specify the correct Hazard Class for a particular application and ensure that this is marked on the timber that you purchase or your builder uses. There are some restrictions on use of CCA (Copper Chrome Arsenate) in decking and associated posts and handrails, picnic tables, playground equipment and the like, see apvma.gov.au for more details.
We offer a range of treatment choices, and these options can differ depending on the product stock line. Among our newer treatment options is MicroPro®, a wood preservative that incorporates micronized copper and azole compounds. This blend provides effective protection against fungal decay and insect infestation in both indoor and outdoor applications. MicroPro® has received certification from Scientific Certification Systems, Inc. (SCS) as an Environmentally Preferable Product (EPP), making it an excellent choice for raised garden beds. Copper chromium arsenic, commonly known as CCA, stands as Australia's most extensively employed wood preservative. Remarkably, despite its arsenic content, it has maintained a safe track record for over five decades.
Embraced worldwide across a wide spectrum of uses, CCA has been pivotal in addressing the ever-increasing demand for construction materials. The process of CCA treatment proves both efficacious and cost-effective. It can substantially prolong the lifespan of radiata pine when used in-ground, extending it from a mere few years to an impressive four decades. The treatment of timber with CCA is meticulously regulated and endorsed by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA).
In cases where there is frequent and close contact with humans, such as in playground equipment, picnic tables, garden seating, balustrading, and decking, the APVMA has placed restrictions on the use of CCA-treated timber. Nevertheless, it's important to note that CCA-treated timber has not been prohibited for use in the vast majority of industrial, commercial, agricultural, and marine applications. New Paragraph
ACQ-treated pine represents a modern approach to pine preservation, free from the use of arsenic, ensuring enhanced peace of mind for the end-user.
The ACQ (Alkaline copper quaternary) preservation system is specifically engineered to offer long-lasting safeguarding for wood utilized in outdoor settings. This system involves the application of copper in combination with a quaternary ammonium compound to the timber through a pressure treatment process, akin to the CCA method.
ACQ serves as a highly effective fungicide and insect repellent, delivering protection against a wide range of decaying fungi, wood-boring insects, and termites. Its performance is nearly identical to that of CCA treatment. ACQ-treated pine initially displays a green hue, which gradually weathers to a gray tone over time, much like CCA-treated pine.
"Light Organic Solvent Preservative (LOSP)" is an alternative method for preserving timber. LOSP involves treating timber with a solution based on white spirit, which includes copper naphthenates, synthetic pyrethroids, and other chemical additives to safeguard against insect infestation and decay.
Typically, the timber undergoes machining and shaping processes before receiving the LOSP treatment. Consequently, if the timber is cut, it is essential to reseal the cut ends using an appropriate sealant. It's important to note that LOSP-treated timber is not suitable for use in ground contact applications. To enhance its durability and protection, LOSP-treated timber is commonly coated with an oil-based protective finish. This coating not only stabilizes the timber but also provides added protection against environmental factors.
